  1. Q:  Do you feel the fact that these two 
  2. communication greats came from Canada stems 
  3. from the reality that this is a huge country in 
  4. which communication is crucial?

  6. A:  In a sense, that question is unanswerable in the 
  7. end. My take is that it matters very much that 
  8. Innis and McLuhan came from Canada, very much. 
  9. But I think we have to look at them in slightly 
  10. different ways, because they were very different 
  11. figures. Innis, for example, grew up in a rural 
  12. environment that was more oral than most 
  13. environments, although very similar to what one 
  14. could have encountered in the United States. Innis
